Tip #2: Write Your Mission Statement

Why does your business exist? A mission statement sets the foundation for your business. A clear mission provides clarity and direction to you and any employees. It gives the business purpose.

Like many things in business, there are no “perfect” templates for a mission statement. Put 5 experts in a room, and each will tell you different components your mission statement must include. Here is one easy way you can create a mission statement.

Basic Mission Statement

To create a meaningful mission statement, break it into pieces by answering 4 questions. Then tie them all together.

  1. What does your business do? (Be as simple as possible)
  • We sell umbrellas.
  • We give haircuts.
  • We sell raspberries.
  • We repair computer systems.
  • We teach mathematics.

2. Who do you do it for?

  • We sell umbrellas to Seattle travelers.
  • We give haircuts to children.
  • We sell raspberries to distributors.
  • We repair computer systems for business owners in El Segundo.
  • We teach mathematics to 5th grade students.

3. How do you do it?

4. Why do you do it? / What value do you bring?
